Langhorne Creek Vineyards |
|
.
|
The Langhorne Creek region is situated some 80km to the south east of Adelaide on the alluvial plains between the Mount Lofty Ranges and Lake Alexandrina.
Whilst this region has been producing winegrapes for over 150 years, viticulture has until recently been confined to the flood plains of the Bremer and Angus
Rivers which drain into Lake Alexandrina. Over the past 10-15 years however, there has been a dramatic expansion of vineyards in the region, increasing plantings
from only about 500 ha in 1985 to in excess of 4,000 ha today.
This dramatic expansion has been fueled by the growth in Australian wine exports and specifically by the water availability from the Lake.
The region has a typically dry climate, with an average rainfall of less than 400mm, hence additional water is essential for vineyards to prosper
on soils off the alluvial floodplain.

MARANDOO ESTATE VINEYARD
Marandoo Estate Vineyard was established from farming land in 1995. Because of the near perfect climatic conditions: it's proximity to a large body of water (Lake Alexandrina), its warm climate,
and extremely low frost risk, it has been ideal for growing high quality fruit."Marandoo" is a local aboriginal word which means "place of plenty".

Planting Details
FABAL recognises the long standing high quality reputation (although low profile) Langhorne Creek has with premium red wines. You may be unaware that in years past many of the Barossa and McLaren
Vale premium wines have had large amounts of Langhorne Creek fruit in them but it has never in the past been imperative to label them as such.
360 hectares of premium varietal vines have been planted at the Marandoo vineyard since 1995.
The varieties planted are primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Semillon varieties. There are however small parcels of very interesting varieties such
as Dolcetto, Petite Verdot, Nebbiolo and Pinot Gris.

BELVIDERE VINEYARD
In 2001 investors at Marandoo through FABAL Vineyards Pty Ltd, established a 65 hectare vineyard in the Belvidere region at the western end of the Langhorne Creek viticultural region. The vineyard,
primarily Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz, is now in full production.

KAYINGA VINEYARD
FABAL manages the 300 hectare GuildGrape MIS project on the shores of Lake Alexandrina. The Kayinga vineyard is entirely red varieties and has developed a reputation to provide the backbone for
key export brands.

NATIONAL VITICULTURAL FUND OF AUSTRLIA PROJECT NO 4
In 2005, FABAL developed a new project in the Belvidere region. This vineyard development utilises the pipeline and water infrastructure that has been supplying the earlier Belvidere vineyard.
